Ponds

A water feature or a small pond will not only give a place for birds to drink and wash, but will help lots of other wildlife too

Ponds should include:

​

  • areas of open water

  • shallow, sloping areas for birds to bathe and drink in, and give frogs and other wildlife easy access

  • rocks and ledges for frogs and newts to hide and other species to sun themselves on

 

 

Marginal planting will soften the edges and attract insects as well as provide cover for smaller creatures from predators.

​

Larger ponds could have deep-water and free-floating plants for larvae to live in and for fish to spawn.

Top up ponds and water features using rain water – perhaps collected using a water butt (which is also great for the environment).

​

If you have a boggy area in your garden you could deepen this to make a water feature or even a pond – marginal planting with bog-loving plants will make a wonderful habitat for all sorts of invertebrates, amphibians and mammals.
