Windows and glass

Windows, glass doors, greenhouses and even decorative mirrors can be lethal for birds

Many birds only see open sky reflected in the glass and don’t realise it is a flat surface

Often the first you know about this is the loud bang of the bird impact.

Larger birds can sometimes survive the impact, but most smaller birds die from their injuries or from shock.  Do anything you can to limit bird strikes.

  • Rooms with windows facing each other are often more susceptible to bird strikes

  • Windows with net curtains or blinds are less likely to be struck

  • Decals of bird silhouettes or patterns are available to help birds to see the window surface

  • Ornamental mirrors are not recommended for outdoor use
