Rock gardens and stone walls offer microclimates of sun and shade that will help a wide range of species thrive

 

From cool, mossy, shady areas for woodlice and spiders to sunny, dry basking spots for butterflies

 

Alpine plants that like to grow in these areas offer nectar for insects, which in turn offer food for birds.  To help bees you could try sempervivum, saxifaga, alpine pinks, erodium and sedum.

Rocks and stones offer nooks and crannies for bugs, lizards, frogs, voles and mice to hide and live in.

If you are able to incorporate a water feature this will produce even more types of habitat to help wildlife.
